Today is Halloween, and what could be a better post than that of Vincent Price's movies? And as the title implies I will be talking about this fantastically-low budget 1960 film:

This is a just alright movie. But what really caught my attention was Roderick Usher's paintings. They are creepy and insane in the best possible way, with bold slashes of oil paint. Here is a Flicker with some on it: Usher Gallery
I particularly like the first and second ones. They seem like depictions of Madeline, the first being before she was entombed, and the second being her vengeful rage.

Martha Stewart has a costume idea that reminds me a lot of Lock from The Nightmare Before Christmas. So in honor of the new edition, I thought I would post the instructions here.

Devil Horns How-To
Choose a medium-width headband (ours was 3/8 inch wide). To make horns, use lightweight air-drying modeling clay. Roll clay into cones, and curl tops with hands, making sure the cones' bottoms are flat. Let dry according to package directions, then cover with black or red acrylic paint. When paint is dry, coat one side of each horn with a thin layer of craft glue and apply glitter generously, sprinkling over horns. Let dry, then glitter opposite side. Once glue is dry, attach horns to headband with hot glue.

Most likely everyone knows that Suzabelle makes beautiful clothing. Especially their jackets. The only problem. They're a tad expensive (upwards of $125). So with fall approaching, where can you find the cool, structured style of Suzabelle, on a budget?

The Gap has been looking pretty good lately. I especially like this particular jacket. Its $78, but hopefully by the time it is actually cold enough to wear it, it will be on sale.

But my heart truely belongs to this Gap jacket, which I came upon whilst reading Nylon magazine. Too bad the website doesn't seem to sell it yet.

This is a very difficult product to find. Ever since Stephen Colbert announced that Ben & Jerry's would be making an ice cream in his name, my father and I have been scouring freezers in search of it. But finally, today I came upon it in the freezer of our local deli and the rest was history. Ever since seeing The Dark Knight yesterday, I have become obsessed with the combination of bright, checkered socks and scruffy, slighty clownish shoes that The Joker wears. I try to hunt down some look-a-likes.

Q: How old is your company and how did you get your start?
A: My company is almost 5 years old. I started out making tote bags that I sold at local shops in Baltimore City, MD. A year or so into it I found a bunch of cool vintage flower beads and by accident starting making my one-of-a-kind Juxtapose necklaces. That’s when I started online and everything picked up.

Q: What is the origin of your company’s name?
A: I’m sorta embarrassed by this, but my name comes from the fact that I was kicked out of art school. (I won’t say which one!) Not because of anything academic - I was just a stupid kid who made a stupid mistake - and the school needed someone to use as an example. I felt that “Art School Kickout” didn’t sound too great, so after some thought I went with “Dropout.” And truthfully, I probably wouldn’t have stayed much longer anyway.

Q: What inspired these rad owl plaques?
A: I was inspired by all the cool looking plaques you find at thrift stores. You know, the ones with the owls on a branch, birds and flowers, deer, etc. I love them and always want to buy them, but they’re usually brown and gold or something like that, and I like bright, colorful things in my home. So I made a simpler, brighter, more colorful version. I put them online because I thought there may be others out there like me.

Q: Besides awesome home items, you’re known for fantastic plastic jewelry adored by cute girls everywhere. We see you’ve even made some pieces teeny tiny sized for Blythe! How did that come about?
A: Thank you! I made the first two Blythe necklaces from pieces I use for earrings. I sent them to a friend as a gift because I saw how much she loved her Blythe dolls. I had been wanting one for myself for awhile, but could never get up the nerve to spend that much on one. So I decided to make a bunch of Blythe-sized necklaces to sell to raise the money to buy one for myself. They did very well, I reached my goal and I will be purchasing a doll very soon! And since they are so much fun to make, I don’t think I’ll stop making them…

Q: What inspires you?
A: I am inspired most by my sisters. I think of them whenever I’m making things. They are vibrant, colorful girls who are always trying something new.

Earlier today, I saw M. Night Shyamalan's The Happening. Even though this did not recieve very good reviews, I was pleasantly surprised at how good it actually was. It was believable in a way that most horror movies nowadays aren't. It also mirrored that good, B-movie, campy feel of late 1960s and 1970s horror movies. It was very enjoyable with great acting by Mark Wahlberg and Zooey Deschanel. The only downside was that there was no twist ending. Or was there?

Q: Who do you style?
A: I have my own magazine called Lula and I style Keira Knightley, among others.

Q: What are you wearing today?

A: Topshop dress I bought before Christmas when I went back to Canada, where I'm from. A Phillip Lim jacket that I ordered from the show last season and shoes by Maloles, which were a gift from the label. Tilda's collar is from Mulberry. It's the first day she has worn it.
Did you subconsciously tone your outfit with Tilda?
No. I was planning to wear a Rodarte dress today, but I had a weird morning and thought I would wear something that was more like a uniform. The easiest thing to wear is a dress and a jacket, and I always have a pair of Chanel flats on me. It's partly because I have a dog and so I can go to the park and play. You can't in heels, no matter how high or low they are.

Q: Does Tilda wear dog clothes?

A: She has a grandfather-green cardigan to keep her warm in the winter.

Q: Describe your style.

A: Lolita is the wrong word, but I guess it's quite playful and eclectic. If I want to buy something, it's usually for some sort of nostalgic reason - because it reminds me of Alice in Wonderland or Little Orphan Annie. I think we are most true to our tastes when we are young and before anyone has told us what we should like.

Q: Has your style never changed then?

Q: Probably not. I think I dressed the best at high school - I'm 28 now. I was experimenting with things for the first time. Now I know that certain clothes mean certain things. In high school, I wore old men's sock gaiters with thigh-high socks. It didn't cross my mind that it was sexual.I just thought it was cool. Now I wouldn't do it.

Q: Is your fringe your trademark?

A: I guess so. I've had it since I was 15. I'm not a very upkeep girl, so I have to be reminded that it's time to cut it.

Q: So are you quite low maintenance?

A: With beauty things, yes. I don't wear makeup very often - I like my freckles.

Q: Do you swap clothes with friends and clients?

A: Only a select few - people I have sleepovers with.

Q: What is the most expensive thing you have ever bought?

A: I try not to dwell on the price because otherwise you convince yourself not to buy something. When I was 15, I didn't buy a pair of Miu Miu shoes because they were expensive. They still haunt me now. I once bought three pairs of Chloé shoes in two weeks because they had appointed a new designer and I was nervous.

Q: Do you dress differently when you are in Canada?

A: No, but I wear jeans and that makes me feel lazy so I don't do it that often. It makes my boyfriend happy when I wear jeans, T-shirt and no makeup. I subconsciously try not to do that!

Q: Whose style do you admire?

A: Marianne Faithfull in the 1960s, and I like the dresses that the Vivian girls wear in Henry Darger's paintings.

Q: How do you decide what to wear in the morning?

A: I think it should be instinctual and not thought through. If I haven't hung things up, those things don't exist. That means I have less to work with, but sometimes when you give yourself limitations you end up making more fun choices.

Q: On what occasion do you think you looked best?

A: Probably on Sundays when I'm not thinking at all. I'll go out for brunch and ask my boyfriend if I look a little nuts and he'll say, "Yes, but it's cute." I pair things that I don't really think look nice together, but then it's Sunday so I don't care and then I end up getting ideas from the nutsness.

One of my favorite books.

Q: What inspired you to write these books?

Well, first there's the real Cyd Charisse - clearly! Ever see the dance fantasy sequence in the movie Singin' in the Rain? If not, do! The "real" Cyd Charisse, who was famous both as a dancer and an actress, is in this movie and she is incredible. I loved old movies when I was a teenager, and spent a lot of time at the Library of Congress in Washington, DC, where I grew up, reading about old movie stars in Life and Photoplay magazines from the 30s, 40s and 50s, as well as watching flicks at the (now gone) Biograph, Circle and AFI Theatres in DC. I also loved the way the letters "Cyd Charisse" looked together; like if I were an artist, I would want to paint those letters together, they look so cool.
Gingerbread was originally inspired when I was living in the Bay Area and my friend Rob Coffman, genius artist extraordinaire, sent me a card he'd made picturing this bizarro girl wearing combat books, with a doll trailing from her hand and a caption that read, "My dolly's not feeling so good." I had always imagined a character named Cyd Charisse, and suddenly there she was; and I happened to have baked some gingerbread the week before, so that particular word was on my mind.
